Hernias arise when an internal part of the abdomen pushes through an areas of weakness in the wall of the groin.
Hernias can cause discomfort and a lump in the groin. Rarely bowel or intestine can get stuck in the hernia (called a strangulated hernia)
If a hernia if causing discomfort or stopping you from doing work or leisure activities it is often advisable to have the hernia repaired with an operation.
Groin hernias can be repaired with open, keyhole or robotic surgery. This can be done under general or regional anaesthetic.
