Common symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, chronic cough, hoarseness, and sometimes difficulty swallowing. If left untreated, GORD can lead to complications such as oesophagitis, oesophageal strictures, Barrett’s oesophagus, and an increased risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Management typically begins with lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, dietary changes, elevating the head of the bed, and avoiding trigger foods, along with pharmacological therapy using proton pump inhibitors or H2 receptor antagonists. In cases where medical therapy is insufficient or complications develop, surgical interventions like Nissen fundoplication or newer minimally invasive procedures such as LINX can be performed to reinforce the lower oesophageal sphincter and prevent reflux.
