This occurs when fat or, less commonly, bowel protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall between the breastbone and the navel, in the midline of the upper abdomen.
These hernias are often small and may be asymptomatic, presenting as a subtle bulge or localized discomfort, though larger hernias can cause pain or tenderness, especially with physical activity or straining. Ventral hernias, including epigastric hernias, develop due to inherent weaknesses in the abdominal wall or increased intra-abdominal pressure, and they can occur at any age. Surgical repair is generally recommended, particularly for symptomatic or enlarging hernias, and may involve direct suture closure for small defects or mesh reinforcement for larger hernias to reduce the risk of recurrence.
