It often results from trauma to the anal canal, commonly due to passing hard or large stools, chronic constipation, or prolonged diarrhoea. The condition typically causes sharp pain during and after bowel movements, sometimes accompanied by bleeding, itching, or a visible crack in the skin. Acute fissures usually heal within a few weeks with conservative measures such as increased fibre intake, adequate hydration, sitz baths, and topical medications to reduce pain and promote healing.
Chronic fissures, which persist for more than six weeks, may require medical interventions like prescription ointments, Botox injections, or surgical procedures to relax the anal sphincter and allow the tissue to heal. Early recognition and proper management are important to prevent complications such as chronic pain or infection.
