It is commonly used to diagnose conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), ulcers, inflammation, infections, cancers, and sources of bleeding.
To prepare for the procedure, patients are typically instructed to fast for at least 6 hours beforehand to ensure an empty stomach, and they may need to stop certain medications temporarily. During the endoscopy, patients are sometimes given a sedative to help them relax, and a local anesthetic may be sprayed to numb the throat. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes, and patients can expect minor discomfort such as a sore throat or bloating afterward, but it is generally safe and well-tolerated.
