Colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy

Colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy are medical procedures used to examine the interior of the large intestine for abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, or cancer.

A colonoscopy involves the insertion of a long, flexible tube equipped with a camera to visualize the entire colon and rectum, allowing for both diagnosis and removal of abnormal tissue during the procedure. In contrast, a flexible sigmoidoscopy uses a shorter tube to examine only the rectum and the lower portion of the colon, making it less invasive but more limited in scope. Both procedures require thorough bowel preparation beforehand to ensure clear visibility of the intestinal lining. This preparation typically involves following a special low-fibre diet for a day or two before the procedure and taking laxatives or a bowel-cleansing solution to empty the colon completely. Patients are also usually instructed to avoid certain foods, drinks, and medications that can interfere with the procedure. Proper bowel preparation is essential, as inadequate cleansing can obscure lesions, increase the risk of complications, and sometimes necessitate repeating the procedure.

These procedures are used to diagnose a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including colorectal cancer, benign polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, diverticulosis, and sources of unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding. They can also detect structural abnormalities, strictures, or infections within the colon. While colonoscopy provides a comprehensive evaluation of the entire colon, flexible sigmoidoscopy may be preferred in certain cases due to its shorter duration, reduced need for sedation, and lower risk of complications.
